Gary Armstrong

GaryArmstrong.jpg

We would like to pay tribute to the legacy of Gary Armstrong, our former trumpet player, who recently passed away. Born in 1951, Gary served as 3rd Trumpet and Assistant Principal Trumpet from 1983 to 2012. He was a very versatile musician who was adept in the symphonic and jazz repertoire. He also played numerous recording sessions, taught at universities, and led a symphony brass ensemble in educational concerts for children. Gary also served on various committees representing the Musicians of the Nashville Symphony over the decades.

Gary earned music degrees from Murray State and Catholic University of America culminating with a Doctors of Musical Arts. He also earned a computer science degree from MTSU. Before joining the Nashville Symphony, Gary was a member of the US Army Band in Washington DC.

It has been over 10 years since Gary played with this orchestra, but those of us who performed with him will always remember his fine musicianship, talent, and knowledge, More importantly, we will always appreciate his friendship and sense of humor. Our condolences to his family, especially his son, John, who has played trumpet with the Nashville Symphony on many occasions and currently serves in the US Navy Band.
